Nicotine salt or freebase, and which strength to pick

What mg means, why salt suits pods, and a simple table to choose by.

What the number means

Nicotine strength is written in mg/ml: milligrams of nicotine in each millilitre of liquid. 20 mg is the same as 2%, 50 mg is 5%. 0 mg has no nicotine at all.

Salt or freebase

  • Nicotine salt feels smoother in the throat at high strengths, and reaches you faster, closer to a cigarette. It is made for low-power pod kits and disposables. Usual strengths: 20, 30, 35, 50 mg.
  • Freebase is the classic kind. It gets harsh at high strengths, so it is sold low for mods (3, 6 mg) and a little higher for mouth-to-lung tanks (12, 18 mg).

Choosing

You are Device Liquid
Smoking more than 15 cigarettes a day Pod kit Salt, 35 to 50 mg
Smoking 5 to 15 a day Pod kit Salt, 20 to 30 mg
A light or social smoker Pod kit Salt, 20 mg
Using a sub-ohm mod Mod Freebase, 3 to 6 mg

Too strong feels like a hit in the throat, a headache or dizziness: put it down and go a step lower next bottle. Too weak and you will find yourself puffing all the time: go a step higher.

Do not mix them up

High-strength salt in a powerful mod delivers far more nicotine than you want. Keep salt for pods and disposables, freebase for mods.

Keep all e-liquid away from children and pets. Nicotine is poisonous if swallowed.
