Coils and pods: resistance, priming and when to change them

Pick the right ohm, avoid the burnt first puff, and know when a coil is done.

Resistance (Ω)

Every coil has a resistance, printed on it in ohms.

  • 1.0 Ω and above: a tighter, mouth-to-lung draw, less vapour, stronger nicotine feel. Use with nicotine salt.
  • 0.6 to 0.9 Ω: a looser draw and more vapour. Still fine with salt at 20 to 30 mg.
  • Below 0.5 Ω (sub-ohm): big clouds on a mod. Use low-strength freebase only.

A coil only fits the devices it is made for. Caliburn G coils, for example, fit the Caliburn G series and KOKO Prime, not other brands. Not sure? Use Find pods and coils in our menu, or ask us.

Priming a new coil

A dry coil burns the cotton on the first puff, and the burnt taste never goes away. So:

  1. Put a few drops of liquid straight onto the cotton through the holes in the coil.
  2. Fit the coil and fill the pod or tank.
  3. Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the cotton to soak through.
  4. Take a few gentle puffs without firing (or at low power) before vaping normally.

When to change it

  • A burnt or dull taste that does not come back after refilling.
  • Gurgling or leaking that cleaning does not fix.
  • The liquid looks dark inside the coil.

Most coils last one to two weeks. Very sweet liquids wear them out faster. For pods with the coil built in, change the whole pod.

Avoid dry hits

Refill before the liquid drops below the coil holes, and do not chain-puff: give the cotton a few seconds to soak between puffs.
